National Preparedness Month Minimize
September is National Preparedness Month...

This week we approach the eighth anniversary of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.  As we reflect back and remember those lost on that tragic day, it is important to reaffirm a commitment to vigilance, preparedness, and protection of our Freedom, Safety, and Security.

Terrorism can take a number of forms and encompasses a broad spectrum of potential threats.  Whether it is attacks on innocent civilians, violent acts of civil unrest, assaults on physical property, or disruption of cyber systems, we must be aware and ready for these potential incidents.  We bring these issues to the surface not to intimidate or scare the general public, but to raise awareness and promote vigilance throughout the community.

Our law enforcement officers and emergency responders are among the most highly qualified in Counterterrorism actions and response operations.  Although you as citizens can rely on these skilled professionals to counteract and react to terrorism, domestic security can be improved through community awareness and vigilance.  This does not suggest we ask you to seek out potential terrorists, but simply observe and report.  This means staying aware of your surroundings, reporting suspicious activities, and preparing yourself and loved ones for those “worst case” scenarios.

A Nobel Prize winning American author once wrote, “When good people in any country cease their vigilance...then evil men will prevail.”  Working together, we can continue to enjoy a life of Freedom, Safety, and Security.
