INCIDENTS OF INTEREST... Minimize

The East Rutherford Fire Department responds to numerous calls of distress and emergency everyday.  While many of these calls can be routine and easily mitigated, others require extended operations and can generate public concern and media interest.  This section of our website aims to help keep you the citizen informed of all "Incidents of Interest."

November 20, 2008 - New Jersey Turnpike Minimize

On November 20, 2008, the East Rutherford Fire Department was dispatched to the area near the 16W Toll Plaza of the New Jersey Turnpike for a large fire.  East Rutherford Fire units arrived finding a 8,500 gallon gasoline tanker overturned and fully involved in fire on the 16W off ramp.

Prior to the fire department's arrival, the driver of the tanker was removed from the vehicle and transported to the hospital by a passing motorist.

East Rutherford Fire Department units, assisted by mutual aid fire departments and the Port Authority of New York/New Jersey were able to suppress the fire and remained on scene for several hours after until the tanker could be removed and the roadway reopened.
