Traffic... Minimize

Traffic and pedestrian safety is a priority to the East Rutherford Police Department. We are continually working to improve safety and address the increasing volume of traffic in our community. The department listens to our residents when they express their concern for traffic and parking violations in their neighborhoods. Whatever corrective measures that are needed to solve the problem is swiftly taken.

The Traffic Division periodically performs checkpoints to ensure motorists are in compliance with the seat belt, child safety and inspection statues. The Traffic, Patrol, Motorcycle and Detective Divisions join together to perform DWI checkpoints and patrols through out the year. The East Rutherford Police Department made 103 DWI arrests in 2005.

The Traffic Division supervises 37 school crossing guards that are assigned to pedestrian crossing thought out the borough. All of the school crossing guards received training at the Bergen County Police Academy.

There are ten Special Police Officers assigned to the Traffic Division. Their duties include parking enforcement during the day time. They are assigned to the school during function in the evening hours, park patrol and assist the court during court session. All of the officers received training from the Bergen and Passaic County Police Academies.

Child Passenger Safety Minimize

The Four Steps to Child Passenger Safety:

  1. INFANT SEATS - designed for children up to 1 year old and, usually 20 pounds in weight. Infant seats are always positioned rear-facing.

  2. FORWARD-FACING SEATS - designed for children between 20 and 40 pounds. Toddler seats are always positioned forward-facing.

  3. BOOSTER SEATS - designed for children between 40 and up to 80 pounds. Booster seats raise a child so the vehicle’s lap and shoulder belts fits properly and allow the knees to bend.

  4. SEAT BELTS - New Jersey law requires drives and adult front seat passengers to wear their seat belts..  Adults should set the proper example and remember that a child is their most precious cargo.

The East Rutherford Police Department has three officers who are certified Child Passenger Safety Technicians. If you would like to have your child’s safety seat(s) checked or have questions, please call 201-438-0165 and request to speak to Sgt Cece, Officer Rymarz, or Officer Rotondo.
