Snow Removal... Minimize

Although snow may create a beautiful winter scene, and provide our children with days of amusement, it can also present a hazard and a nuisance to our daily lives.  In order to control problems presented by the snow, our department is committed to removing snow and controlling the winter conditions as much as possible.  With a fleet of 11 plows, 5 salt spreaders, and a number of snow blowers, the Department of Public Works response to snow emergencies is swift and aggressive.

Prior to a winter storm, the Department of Public Works will begin to prepare equipment and ensure that it is ready and capable to handle the expected weather conditions.

During and following a storm, the Department's focus will be to clear snow from roadways and borough property sidewalks.  Once the imminent hazards presented by the storm have been removed, the Department will then begin to remove as much snow as possible from all roadways and the remainder of the borough's properties.  Depending on the capacity of the storm, snow removal will vary in time.  Residents and visitors of the borough are encouraged to contact us with any areas they feel are hazardous.  These areas will be addressed in a timely fashion.

Below are some tips we offer to make the snow less of a hassle for you and a way for us to improve our snow removal service.

Snow Removal Tips... Minimize

●  Refrain from throwing snow into the roadway.  This is a violation of a borough ordinance.

●  Residents should try to pile snow to the right side of their driveways to prevent being "plowed in."  Residents on one-way streets should pile snow to the side in which the traffic flows.

●  Under borough ordinance, residents have 24 hours following a storm to remove snow from sidewalks.

●  The Department of Public Works encourages you to wait as long as possible to clear driveways.  This will prevent snowplows from re-blocking driveways.

●  If possible, vehicles should be removed from roadways to allow for better snow removal.

●  Reserving parking with items such as garbage cans and chairs is prohibited under borough ordinance.  This can cause hazards to drivers and create an inconvenience for snow removal processes.

●  The Department of Public Works suggests residents use calcium chloride ice melt to preserve sidewalks and other concrete surfaces.
